Julianstown Youth Orchestra (Ireland)

Conductor: Fergus Sheil

Julianstown Youth Orchestra was founded in 2011 by Maria and Fergus Sheil. From an initial 12 players, the orchestra quickly grew to 100 young musicians playing in both a senior and junior orchestra. JYO has been tutored by members of leading Irish orchestras – RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and has taken part in performance projects with both orchestras. In 2013 JYO performed with celebrity violinist Tasmin Little. JYO champions creativity by offering opportunities for members to compose and conduct orchestral works. Today’s performance features works written by members of the orchestra for the Gesamtkunstwerk project in 2017. This involved new compositions under the mentorship of composer Brian Irvine, and a staged dramatic performance devised by members of the orchestra and director John McIlduff, choreographer Jessica Kennedy and designer Sarah Jane Shiels. After the performance, the project was recorded at Windmill Lane studio. JYO has previously performed at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, Convention Centre Dublin as well as other Irish venues. JYO facilitates instrumental tuitions with leading professionals. Players have access to an extensive instrument bank covering most instruments of the orchestra. This is the orchestra’s first tour outside Ireland.
